Bringlish word of the week – Chavtastic

It’s been a lot of fun educating my US colleagues on the use of the term chavtastic and it’s catching on!

What is a chav? Its generally a term we use to describe young people who speak incorrectly, wear baseball hats 24/7 (not common attire on the streets of Britain), fake sports tracksuits and extremely large white trainers (gym shoes). The girls, often referred to as chavettes, are known for sporting big hair, even bigger earrings and Mr T like jewellery. They have also been known to affect the teenage pregnancy stats. Think of MTVs 16 and pregnant with a little more bling. You’ll generally find them hanging around on street corners appearing more menacing than they really are. And some, not all, will find themselves in trouble with the law at some time.

Vicky Pollard is a fictional character in a TV show called Little Britain and she is the extreme version of the chavette. She has been around a while but this is still a classic chav performance:

So next time you think something is ‘trashy’ try out ‘chavtastic’. It’s just a cool word!

To colour or color? The origin of Bringlish

Every time I type the words favor or center or neighbor I cringe inside and await a scolding from my primary school teacher Mrs Wilson (great teacher but equally terrifying when I was 9 years old).

Many people think the hardest part of transitioning to the US from the UK is driving on the opposite side of the road. It’s not. Remember the spelling tests as a kid? The effort you made to get it right every time? Imagine spelling things correctly for 30 years then being forced to spell them incorrectly. And, yes, I think the Brits have it right because spelling colour with a U is just what I know. And I’m equally ok that Americans see color as the correct spelling.

The Alexandria Crew

The story is the same every time. You break up with your significant other, then pep talks from all of your friends and family inevitably follow. The pep talk is the same every time, too. “There are lots of fish in the sea!” WELL, I remember always thinking, I do NOT want just any fish! TopGolf doesn’t either. We hand pick only the very best- FRESH fish on the market! OK, so I am relating our associates to fish and that seems wrong, but it’s true. We want your event to be great, spectacular, Ahhh-MAZING and oh-so fly! We think that having an Event Bay Host to run your event is the way to make that happen and it has been proven time and time again. Ask anyone who has hosted an event with us.

Clap Clap, Clap Yo Hands

Every BODY CLAP your hands. You all know that cheesy song that plays at every wedding, don’t you? Come on now, the CHA CHA slide. It’s the one you can’t help but get up and dance to or the one where you end up looking and laughing at Grandma and Grandpa Joe shakin’ it. All I know is the A Team (Alexandria that is) had some serious events this past weekend. Brad’s Dirty Thirty gave a stand out performance and was anything but cheesy. This event deserves some serious claps and kudos. The real kind of claps and not the cheesy song kind. Lauren Wolfe, hostess extraordinaire did some big things to kick off her boyfriend’s 30th birthday here at TopGolf Alexandria.

Will you take Lexi Thompson to Prom?

It’s that time of year again. Time to bust out the boutonnieres and corsages. Time to wear a tux that most likely doesn’t fit you and shoes that are so shiny that they could blind your date! That’s right it’s PROM season. I thought specifically of TopGolf Alexandria when I saw this YouTube video of pro-golfer Lexi Thompson, asking for a special prom date—from a young man in the United States Military.
